Binance rolled out options contracts on gold and silver on July 29, expanding its commodity derivatives lineup beyond perpetual futures.

The new contracts trade through Nest Exchange Limited, the company's exchange entity regulated by the Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM). Gold and silver perpetual futures have been available on the platform since January 2026, and the options contracts build directly on that product line.

The trading volumes behind the perpetual futures gave Binance reason to move ahead. Gold perpetuals recorded a peak daily trading volume of $7.77 billion. Silver perpetuals reached a peak of $7.27 billion in a single day. Those figures represented 3%-8% of COMEX gold volume and 9%-20% of COMEX silver volume at the time those peaks occurred.

Commodity Demand Reshaping Crypto Markets

Shunyet Jan, head of exchange and trading at Binance, said gold hitting record highs pushed more users toward commodity exposure. He also pointed to demand for inflation hedges outside traditional equities as a factor behind the launch. A Binance representative said simplified access to traditional market exposure tends to pull in users quickly once the infrastructure is in place.

The new contracts are European-style, meaning they can only be exercised at expiration. They settle in Tether (USDT). Pricing is calculated using a weighted average drawn from multiple independent third-party data vendors that track traditional gold and silver markets. Binance said this method produces a benchmark that does not depend on any single price source or token.

Exchanges typically build liquid futures markets before layering on options products. Futures establish a deep order book with tight spreads, and options follow once that core market is functioning. Binance's commodity perpetuals, available since January, gave the exchange the foundation it needed to justify the next step.

Retail Access Comes With Limits

Retail traders can buy call options, which provide upside exposure for a fixed premium, and put options, which protect against price declines. They cannot write options, meaning they cannot sell contracts to other traders—that activity is reserved for designated market makers only.

Writing options involves collecting premium income in exchange for absorbing the risk of large price swings. It demands significant capital and a high tolerance for losses. Binance said limiting that activity to market makers removes the liquidation risk that would otherwise apply to retail participants holding short options positions.

Binance said it will release client-education videos alongside the launch and follow the risk disclosure requirements set by its ADGM framework. The company also said it plans to add options on other underlying assets in the future. It is also exploring whether tightly regulated retail options writing could become available at a later stage.
