MoonPay has launched PayBox, a payment vault that connects directly to ChatGPT and Claude, letting users authorize crypto purchases, token swaps, and cross-chain transactions from within a conversation. Users retain custody of their funds throughout the process.

To set up PayBox, users install it inside ChatGPT or Claude, create an account, register a passkey, then connect a crypto wallet and optionally add a payment card. The vault can be funded through an existing wallet or a card after MoonPay's identity verification process is complete.

How Transactions Are Approved and Secured

Once connected, the AI assistant prepares a transaction based on a natural-language prompt. The user then approves it with a passkey before any funds move. Users can also switch to an autonomous mode, which lets the AI execute transactions automatically within spending limits they define in advance.

Wallet keys are protected using multi-party computation (MPC) and trusted execution environments (TEEs). MoonPay chief engineer Neeraj Prasad said keys are split across hardware-isolated secure environments, preventing any single device, session, or party from moving funds independently. For card payments, PayBox uses Visa's agentic commerce protocol, which processes transactions without exposing or storing the underlying card number. Each passkey approval is valid for only one transaction, so captured approvals cannot be reused.

PayBox supports Solana and Ethereum Virtual Machine-compatible blockchains, including Ethereum, Base, Hyperliquid, Arbitrum, and Polygon. Payment methods include debit cards, bank accounts, Apple Pay, and PayPal. MoonPay said developers can also integrate PayBox into their own AI applications through a software development kit.

x402 Integration and What Comes Next

PayBox supports x402, an open payment protocol originally developed by Coinbase that lets AI agents make internet-native payments. Contributed to the Linux Foundation in April 2026, x402 is now governed as a vendor-neutral industry standard backed by more than 20 organizations, including AWS, Cloudflare, Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, Shopify and Anthropic. Current PayBox integrations include restaurant reservations through AgentRes.dev, shopping through Purch.xyz, and flight bookings through BRIJ.fi.

Network activity across the x402 ecosystem has grown alongside adoption. Blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis reported in June 2026 that agentic payments on Coinbase's Base network surpassed 100 million transactions within roughly nine months. The protocol's public dashboard showed more than 12.7 million transactions over the past 30 days across participating services at the time of writing.

Prasad said support for additional AI platforms beyond ChatGPT and Claude is expected within the next month. MoonPay also plans to expand PayBox into token swaps, perpetual futures trading, and liquidity management within the same timeframe. PayBox is built on the key management infrastructure of Sodot, a company MoonPay acquired earlier this year.
