Crypto Adoption News

South Korea's largest technology conglomerate is moving deeper into digital finance. Samsung SDS, the IT services arm of Samsung Group, confirmed on July 30 that it is in active discussions with Dunamu, the operator of cryptocurrency exchange Upbit, on building joint infrastructure for stablecoins and AI-based payment systems.

CEO Lee Jun-hee revealed the talks during the company's Q2 earnings call. He said Samsung SDS has already completed end-to-end testing of the full stablecoin process, covering everything from issuance through to settlement. The company also worked on the Korea Securities Depository's tokenized securities platform, which Lee cited as evidence of its readiness to operate in the digital asset space.
Lee reportedly described the Dunamu relationship as a strategic priority rather than a financial position. He said both companies plan to develop concrete business models for digital financial infrastructure, using Samsung SDS's cloud, security, and IT capabilities alongside Dunamu's blockchain experience.

Strategic Stake Backs Deeper Partnership

The investment that underpins the partnership was finalized in May 2026. Samsung SDS, Samsung Securities, and Samsung Card agreed at that time to jointly acquire a 4% stake in Dunamu, tying multiple Samsung affiliates to South Korea's digital asset sector. Lee said the acquisition was made with a strategic purpose and is not intended as a passive financial holding.

The July 30 disclosure came shortly after Samsung Electronics announced separately that it would add stablecoin support to Samsung Wallet. That move and the Dunamu talks together point to a coordinated push across Samsung's business units into digital payments and asset infrastructure. Samsung SDS did not respond to a request for comment after the earnings call, and Dunamu declined to comment.

Q2 Revenue Climbs as Cloud Demand Rises

Samsung SDS posted Q2 revenue of 3.72 trillion Korean won ($2.6 billion) on July 30, up 5.9% from the same period a year earlier. Cloud services drove much of that growth. Total cloud revenue rose 17% year-over-year, while external cloud business revenue jumped 75%, driven by demand for the company's cloud platform and GPU-as-a-service offerings.

The company also laid out a multi-year AI infrastructure plan during the call. It aims to expand AI infrastructure capacity from its current 110 megawatts to 230 MW by 2029. The longer-term target calls for capacity to exceed 800 MW by 2031, with digital finance services positioned as one part of that broader buildout.
