Crypto Exchange News

Coinbase shares fell roughly 7% in after-hours trading on July 30 after the crypto exchange reported second-quarter results that included record trading market share and triple-digit growth in its prediction markets business. The stock had gained ground during the regular session before reversing once the earnings figures were published.

The exchange captured 10.3% of global crypto trading volume in the second quarter, up from 9.1% in the prior quarter. Coinbase described it as the third consecutive quarter of market share gains, a run achieved during a period when overall industry trading activity slowed.

Prediction Markets Cross $100M in Annualized Revenue

Prediction market contracts and revenue more than doubled quarter-over-quarter, growing 106% and crossing $100 million in annualized revenue. Coinbase said its binaries products, launched late in the quarter, tripled daily traders and quadrupled daily revenue compared to figures from May 2026.

Subscription and services revenue reached $555 million, accounting for close to half of the company's total net revenue. Coinbase said 88% of its net revenue now comes from sources other than Bitcoin (BTC) spot trading, a shift the company has been working toward since announcing its "everything exchange" strategy nearly a year earlier.

Average USD Coin (USDC) held in Coinbase products reached a record $20 billion during the quarter, which the company said represents more than 30% of total USDC in circulation. Coinbase posted its 14th consecutive quarter of positive adjusted EBITDA and credited AI adoption within its engineering teams as a contributor to productivity gains during the period.

Armstrong Points to Expansion Beyond Bitcoin Trading

CEO Brian Armstrong said in the earnings release that hitting a third consecutive all-time high in trading volume market share showed the exchange's broader strategy could perform across different market conditions. Armstrong said the company now operates across trading, payments, and lending, and is no longer a business whose fortunes are tied solely to Bitcoin's price.

Coinbase launched its "everything exchange" strategy to build revenue streams in prediction markets, tokenized equities, and derivatives alongside its core crypto trading business. The after-hours stock decline, despite broadly strong headline figures, reflected the level of expectations the market had set for the company going into the report.
