Wintermute's H1 2026 OTC report shows institutions drove 72% of spot flow, a record high, as altcoin capital clusters in fewer assets and retail influence fades.

Institutional investors generated 72% of all spot flow on Wintermute's over-the-counter (OTC) desk in the first half of 2026, the highest share the crypto market maker has recorded since it began tracking the metric. The figure is up from 61% in the second half of 2025 and 59% in the first half of that year, according to the firm's OTC flow report.
Wintermute said liquidity was concentrating in the tokens institutions favored while activity across the market's long tail of smaller assets weakened. The firm said the pattern could make future altcoin rallies narrower, with gains clustering around fewer assets rather than spreading broadly.
Institutions Trade Fewer Tokens, Move On Faster
Between the first half of 2024 and the first half of 2026, the number of unique tokens traded by Wintermute's institutional counterparties grew by 24%. Among retail clients over the same period, that count grew by 76%, pointing to a wider appetite for smaller assets outside institutional circles.
Institutional activity following a surge in a token's price and volume faded within roughly one day, the report found. Retail activity after a comparable surge typically remained elevated for about three days.
The gap in how long each group stays active after a price spike matters for market structure. When institutional money moves on quickly, tokens that rallied on institutional flow may find less support holding those levels if retail participation does not fill the gap.

Other Data Providers See the Same Pattern
Wintermute's findings arrived alongside data from other sources pointing in the same direction. CryptoQuant CEO Ki Young Ju said on June 20 that the traditional rotation of Bitcoin (BTC) profits into smaller crypto assets had effectively stopped, with Bitcoin-denominated altcoin pair volumes near their weakest level since 2021.
Kaiko reported in July 2025 that the 10 largest altcoins had grown to represent 63% of total altcoin trading volume, up from around 50% earlier that year. The 10 largest non-stablecoin altcoins also accounted for about 80.5% of the total non-Bitcoin, non-stablecoin market capitalization in the most recent data.
DWF Labs managing partner Andrei Grachev said on March 15 that too many tokens were competing for a limited pool of capital, with institutional money remaining concentrated in Bitcoin, Ethereum (ETH), and tokenized real-world assets. The Wintermute report, alongside these independent data points, describes a market where broad altcoin rallies are becoming harder to sustain.
